Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Mentorship Award

Objectives:

• Expose dermatology and pediatric residents to the practice of pediatric dermatology.
• Develop mentoring relationships.
• Recruit Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) physicians into pediatric dermatology.

Application Deadline: May 1, 2026

This award supports the academic pursuits of historically marginalized individuals with disproportionately low representation in pediatric dermatology. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) describes “underrepresented in medicine” as “those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population,” defined as Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. To promote greater inclusivity in our selection process, we will consider additional elements of diversity to include LGBTQIA+ identification, physical or mental impairment, immigration status, socio-economic background, or disadvantaged experiences. Additionally, the selection process will be expanded to include pediatric residents with an interest in pursuing formal training in dermatology and a career in pediatric dermatology.

Upon Completion of Mentorship Experience

Awardees must submit a one-page report no later than one month after completing their mentorship experience to info@pedsderm.net. The summary report should provide a detailed description of the mentorship experience, highlight your experience, and tell us how it has enhanced your career development and growth in caring for pediatric dermatology patients. The SPD may also ask past award recipients to contribute to interview opportunities through our PR division to help promote the awards in future cycles.
